Biographie
Winslet a été acclamé pour le travail dramatique et comique dans des projets allant des films d'époque aux films contemporains, et des grandes productions hollywoodiennes aux films indépendants moins médiatisés. Elle a été récompensée par la Screen Actors Guild, l'Académie britannique des arts du film et de la télévision et par la Hollywood Foreign Press Association, entre autres, et a été nominée pour un Emmy Award pour la télévision. Élevée à Berkshire, Winslet étudie le théâtre depuis son enfance et commence sa carrière à la télévision britannique en 1991.
Elle a fait ses débuts au cinéma dans Heavenly Creatures (1994), pour lequel elle a reçu ses premiers éloges critiques. Elle a obtenu une reconnaissance pour son travail subséquent dans un rôle de soutien dans Sense and Sensibility (1995) et pour son rôle principal dans Titanic (1997), le film le plus rentable à l'époque. Depuis 2000, les performances de Winslet continuent de susciter des commentaires positifs de la part de critiques de cinéma, et elle a été nominée pour divers prix pour son travail dans des films comme Quills (2000), Iris (2001), Eternal Sunshine of Spotless Mind (2004), À la recherche de Neverland (2004), Little Children (2006), The Reader (2008) et Revolutionary Road (2008). Sa performance dans ce dernier a incité le magazine de New York à la décrire comme "la meilleure actrice de cinéma anglophone de sa génération". La comédie romantique The Holiday et le film d'animation Flushed Away (2006) ont été parmi les plus grands succès commerciaux de sa carrière.
Winslet a été récompensée d'un Grammy Award pour le meilleur album de mots parlés pour les enfants en 2000. Elle a été incluse en tant que chanteuse sur certaines bandes sonores des œuvres qu'elle a jouées, et le single "What If" de la BO de Christmas Carol: The Movie ( 2001), a été un tube dans plusieurs pays européens. Winslet a une fille avec son ex-mari, Jim Threapleton, et un fils avec son deuxième mari, Sam Mendes, dont elle est séparée. Elle vit à New York.
