Biographie
Il a co-écrit le scénario de Patton, remportant l'Oscar en 1970. Sa renommée de réalisateur s'est intensifiée avec la sortie de The Godfather en 1972. Le film a révolutionné la réalisation de films dans le genre des gangsters, recueillant les lauriers universels de la critique et du public. Il a remporté trois Oscars, dont le deuxième, qu'il a remporté pour le meilleur scénario adapté, et il a contribué à consolider sa position en tant que l'un des principaux réalisateurs américains. Coppola l'a suivi avec une suite tout aussi réussie The Godfather Part II, qui est devenue la toute première suite à remporter l'Oscar du meilleur film. Le film a reçu des éloges encore plus élevés que son prédécesseur et lui a décerné trois Oscars - pour le meilleur scénario adapté, le meilleur réalisateur et le meilleur film. La même année est sorti The Conversation, qu'il a réalisé, produit et écrit. Le film a remporté la Palme d'Or au Festival de Cannes 1974. Son prochain projet de réalisateur était Apocalypse Now en 1979, et il était aussi connu pour sa production longue et troublée que pour sa représentation vivante et frappante de la guerre du Vietnam. Il remporte sa deuxième Palme d'Or au Festival de Cannes 1979.
Bien que certaines des entreprises de Coppola dans les années 1980 et au début des années 1990 aient été saluées par la critique, le travail ultérieur de Coppola n'a pas rencontré le même niveau de succès critique et commercial que ses films des années 70.
